Rare c. 1800 N. SCHAUER Cornice Molding Plane – Revolutionary War Veteran
$335.00
Nicklaus Schauer (alternate spellings: Shouar, Shovar, Shawer and Shower) was born in 1755 in Berks County, PA, and probably started making planes sometime in the 1790’s. He was an orphan, which may account for the numerous spellings of his last name. He is noted as, “making canteens for army” in June of 1778, and is listed as having served as a corporal during the Revolution in 1776. This 14 inch example retains its original 2-1/4 inch round top (an 18th century feature) Weldon marked iron. A great plane that literally helped to build our, at the time, fledging nation. Cornice planes by N. Schauer are rare.
