Very Early! J. & H.M. POOL Easton Mass. Mahogany Level with Outboard Plumb – Late 1820’s

A fantastic and very early 24 inch mahogany level by the grandfathers of American level making, John Pool and his brother Horace Minot. The Pools began making levels as early as 1825, and I believe this to be from their earliest years. The top plate has a very long 4″ opening sight and is very unusual with notched corners rather than the normal inversed arch ends, and I believe is earlier than the inverse arch top plates. (I’ve only seen one or two other Pool levels with this type of top plate.) Unmarked, but the outboard plumb is unique to the Pools and are confirmed used by them from known examples with J. & H.M. Pool labels. Both vials are full and working. A special and very early Pool level that is almost 200 years old.
