J.W. ANDREWS Special Purpose Walnut Plumb & Level – 1840’s

$325.00

A very rare, special purpose 36 inch level with side plumb by early Albany, NY maker, Joel W. Andrews. What exact application these levels were used for, with their unique end cutouts and groves that run the length of the level is unknown (possibly for mason work), but there are 2-3 known examples of this form made by Andrews. Andrews is one of New York’s earliest documented level makers, beginning no later than 1842. The earliest mention I have found of him being involved in level making was in the November 1842 issue of The Cultivator, where he is noted as having exhibited a level at the New York State Agricultural Society Fair held in Albany.
A great pre-Civil War level. Both vials are full and working.
