J. & H.M. POOL Level with Outboard Plumb Assembly – c. 1830
An early 24 inch mahogany level by the grandfathers of American level making, John Pool and his brother Horace Minot. The Pools began making levels as early as 1825, and examples with the brass outboard plumb assemblies are from their early years. Unmarked, but the outboard plumb is unique to the Pools and are confirmed used by them from known examples with J. & H.M. Pool labels. Both vials are full and working. The level was “restored” by a previous owner and the level vial is a slow, modern replacement. An early American level that is almost 200 years old.
