Uber Rare! C.J. WEBER Patent 1903 Sighting Level – Only Known Example
The is the only known example of Cyrus J. Weber’s September 15, 1903 patent sighting level. The patent was for a sighting inclinometer, but this example was made just incorporating the sighting feature of the patent. Note the similarities in appearance and constriction to the Helb patent inclinometers, and that the top plate is signed, “York Co. Railroad, PA.” Weber was granted his patent seven months before Helb applied for his first patent in April of 1904. Did Helb buy the rights to Weber’s patent? Or perhaps he stole the idea? We don’t know. OAL: 24 inches. Full brass bottom plate as was later found on Helb’s levels. Both vials are full and working. An extremely rare and important part of level history.
