RARE! R. Ledig Mahogany Level – Underground Railroad Member

One of only two known levels by Rudolph Ledig of Newark, N.J. 18″ dark mahogany with unique chamfered edges on the ends. Plumb vial is missing.
Ledig was granted a patent for an inclinometer on Feb. 13, 1866 (patent #52,579) of which there are no known examples. Ledig was a well known manufacturer of bar fixtures and house builder in Newark, and was a member of the Underground Railroad, facilitating the escape of enslaved African-Americans. “Ledig, R. & Co., Spirit Levels” was listed in the 1867 Newark directory.
