A very rare level patented November 26, 1867 by Patrick Clifford of Holyoke, Mass. This 8 inch example is THE exact level shown on page 120 of American Levels and their Makers by Don Rosebrook, and was previously a part of Don’s legendary collection. Marked with an earlier patent date of June 11, 1867 that was for a different level patent obtained by Clifford, of which there are no known examples. A very fine example retaining most of its original japanning with remnants of gold highlights on the back side. Great form with a super gizmo factor.
