Rare 22″ Millers Falls No.1 Mahogany Level

Millers Falls began making wooden levels in 1888 intending to use Albert Goodell’s Oct. 16, 1888 patent for adjustment. This mechanism proved very cumbersome and unsatisfactory to Millers Falls, and the use of this patent in production seems to have been discontinued very early based on there being no known examples with the patent adjustment. This is one of only 3-4 examples I know of that were intended to carry the patent as indicated by the holes in the top plate and plumb vial cover as were needed for the adjustment. Millers Falls clearly didn’t want to waste parts, and thus used leftover stock of trim for a very few levels. Very rare size of 22″ with a beautiful mahogany stock with a portion of sapwood. This level is unmarked, as are the other 2-3 levels I know of configured as such.
