J.W. Harmon *Patent Applied For* Sighting Level

One of only two known examples with “PAT’ AP’L’D’ FOR” cast in the body of the level rather than a patent date. John W. Harmon of Boston, Mass. was one of the most enduring and prolific level makers of the 19th century. He was granted three patents (#’s 234709, 270951 & 281267) for his Artificers’ sighting levels, and with their multicolored pinstripe decorations were among the most attractive cast iron levels made. Lots of pinstriping remains on this example but has darkened. Very good milling marks visible on the bottom. Plumb vial is dry. A very rare and early example.
